Clan Maxwell USA accepts members in three categories:

FULL MEMBERS - Persons who are at least 18 years old and who bear the Maxwell surname (however spelled) by birth and descent or whose mother (or any grandparent, great grandparent, or great great grandparent) bore the Maxwell surname by birth and descent.

ASSOCIATE MEMBERS - Persons who are wives, husbands, or legally adopted children of one who bears the Maxwell surname by birth and descent.

AFFILIATE MEMBERS - Persons who are at least 18 years old whose descent from persons bearing the Maxwell surname is more distant than five generations.

ALLIED FAMILIES - Persons with surnames recognized as allies and sependents of the House of Maxwell are eligible for membership in all three membership types described above, simply substituting their family surnames for “Maxwell” to determine the appropriate category. The allied and dependent families recognized by Clan Maxwell are:

Adair Blackstock Dinwiddie Dinwoodie Edgar Herries
Kirk Kirkland Latimore MacKittrick Maxton Monreith
Moss Nithsdale Peacock Pollock/Pollok Polk/Paulk Rawlins
Sturgeon Wardlaw

What Are the Benefits?

Members receive the Society’s quarterly newsletter, The House of Maxwell. This award-winning publication includes updates on Clan Maxwell activities, articles on Maxwell (and allied families) history, and interesting stories of Maxwells around the world both past and present.

Members receive an annual Membership Directory containing names, addresses, and e-mail addresses of all other Clan Maxwell USA members.

Members participate in Scottish festivals throughout the United States, representing the clan whenever and wherever Scottish clans gather. These events inevitably lead to fellowship with never-before-met Maxwells, and they allow us to display our heritage for family and non-family alike.

Members can participate in Clan Maxwell’s efforts to research and preserve the family’s Scottish heritage. For example, the group is currently sponsoring historical research and artistry designed to produce a visual depiction of the “lost” Maxwell Castle of Dumfries, Scotland.

Members will have access to the Clan Maxwell USA genealogy database when it is completed. The database is currently being developed, and plans are underway to make it accessable to members via the internet. Members also regularly publish genealogical queries in the quarterly newsletter, often leading to connections with members who have answers they need.

The greatest benefit of Clan Maxwell membership is simply knowing that you are part of your worldwide family, proudly remembering its colorful past and enjoying opportunities to be with others who share your blood, your heritage, and your inheritance as members of the House of Maxwell.

Do I Have to Know All About My Genealogy?

No you don't; however, we do ask for enough information to show your connection with the Maxwells or an allied or dependent family. For that reason, we ask that you complete a basic genealogy chart with whatever information you have. That serves two purposes: (1) to show your connection to Clan Maxwell and (2) to let us add your genealogical information to our database. As a member, you will have access to that database for your own further genealogical research.
